Summer Events for Families in Palo Alto

Keeping the kiddos entertained over summer break is no easy feat, but we’re here to help. Here’s a list of 10+ different events that are perfect for the whole family.

MSC Open House 6/18

If your little one is obsessed with cars, trucks, or pets… this one is a must-do. City of Palo Alto staff will be giving warehouse tours and demonstrations, inviting you inside fire trucks and police cars, and answering questions. Plus, Pets in Need will be bringing adoptable animals and our very own Sequoia will be there too. Live  music and delicious local food trucks are sure to make this event a blast!

Location: City of Palo Alto Municipal Service Center, 3201 E Bayshore Road, Palo Alto, CA 94303

Description: “Connect as a community on Saturday, June 18 as we showcase some of the “behind the scenes” work that we do for the Palo Alto community. The MSC will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Enjoy delicious food offered by local food trucks, learn all about electric vehicles at the EV expo, dance to live music, and most of all, have lots of fun!”

Summer Hot Dog Productions 

Summer Hot Dog productions are perfect for little ones who aren’t quite ready for a sit-down show. With outdoor seating there’s plenty of wiggle room, and quiet areas are available nearby. These shows are sensory friendly with natural lighting and no sound cues. You can bring your own snacks or purchase food and drink onsite. Plan on bringing a blanket or low chair (lawn chairs block the view). 

Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Date: June 22-July 3, 2022 Wednesday-Sunday at 6:30 p.m.

Location: Palo Alto Children's Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA

Description: “This delightful musical, with catchy songs and more than a few laugh-out-loud moments, features a happy family of porridge-hungry bears, along with a good-hearted lumberjack and his feisty daughter Goldi.  The whole family will love this delightful adaptation of the classic fairy tale about the importance of protecting the environment and learning to live with those around you.”

Stinky Cheese Man

Date: July 20-August 7, 2022 Wednesday-Sunday at 6:30 p.m. 

Location: Palo Alto Children's Theatre, 1305 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto, CA
Description: “A classic offbeat tale filled with beloved fairy tale characters and lots of frenzied fun, The Stinky Cheese Man is the perfect summer musical for audiences of all ages!”

World Music Day 6/25

Date: Saturday, June 25, 2022 12:15-2:15pm and 6:30pm

Location: Rinconada Park

Description: “Celebrate World Music Day with the Palo Alto Recreation Foundation & The City of Palo Alto! Bring a picnic and enjoy a day of acoustic music throughout Rinconada Park.”

SteamLab Saturday 7/2

This event is ideal for ages 4-11 and requires advanced reservation. There are multiple events in the series, so we recommend checking back for future SteamLab Saturday opportunities! 

Date: Saturday, July 2, 2022 from 12pm - 12:30pm

Location: Mitchell Park Library

Description: “Explore the science of diffusion by making coffee filter flowers! Create patterns with various colors and then predict how those colors will interact…”

July 4 Celebration

Celebrate Independence Day with your community at this July 4th gathering. Featuring live music, food trucks, and family-friendly activities, this is a great opportunity to get your little ones out of the house.

Location: Mitchell Park, 600 East Meadow Drive, Palo Alto, CA 94303

Description: The City of Palo Alto invites you to our free July 4th Summer Event. Located at Mitchell Park on Monday, July 4th, from 11am - 3pm, come enjoy live music, a variety of food trucks, and fun games/activities for kids. Bring your own chairs, picnic mats, and reusable water bottles. Current public health guidelines will be followed.

What’s Up Wednesday

Happy Birds 7/6

Description: “Amazing and colorful parrots will perform over 25 tricks during this exciting bird show!”

What's Up Wednesday: Village Rhythms with Onye Onyemaechi

Date: Wednesday, July 20, 2022 from 3:30 to 4:30pm

Location: The Bowl at Mitchell Park

Description: “Onye Onyemaechi, MBA is a world-renowned master percussionist, educator, author, and performing musician, who engages children and families in a participatory experience of African Village life. For this event, he will actively involve the audience in drumming, dancing, songs and village stories. Onye uses captivating music, native dress and instruments presented in a historical/cultural context.”

Make a Zine

Date: Wednesday, July 27, 2022 from 3:30pm to 4:30pm

Location: Rinconada Library 1213 Newell Rd. Palo Alto CA 94303
Description: “Learn about zines, or self-published, handmade books, and contribute a page to a collaborative zine about community that will be printed and shared at the library. Participants will also learn about other techniques and ideas to help inspire their future zinemaking! This workshop is open to all ages. No materials needed, just bring yourself and your creativity!”


Summer Concert Series

Family Concert Series at Magical Bridge Playground

The Family Concert Series at Magical Bridge Playground is a fun opportunity to experience music in a family-friendly, sensory-friendly setting. Each week features a different artist!

Description: “Magical Bridge is overjoyed to announce that their summer concert series is BACK! Their Magical Music and Motion concerts are FREE, family-friendly, sensory-friendly, and ALL are welcome. If you are unable to attend the performance in person, they will be livestreaming the performance on their Facebook page.”


Family Movie Nights

Family Movie Night 7/22

Are you or your kiddo tired of watching movies inside? Mix up your routine, get outdoors, and enjoy a showing of Disney’s Luca at Mitchell Park. 

Date: Friday, July 22 at 7:00pm

Location: Mitchell Park Athletic Field, 600 East Meadow Drive, Palo Alto, CA 94303

Description: “Join the Community Services Department for Family Movie Night on the Mitchell Park Southeast Athletic Field. Seating will start around 7:00pm and the show begins at sunset.Showing ‘Luca’ on July 22nd.”
