Veiled Chameleon Fun Facts

  • The veiled chameleon gets its name from the bony protrusion on its head, which is called a casque. It serves to channel water droplets down into the chameleon’s mouth, a crucial adaptation in their dry habitats.
  • They are solitary, tree-dwelling, and found only in Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
  • The are mostly insectivores, ambushing prey with their sticky tongues that are almost twice the length of their body!
  • Like many chameleons, veiled chameleons can change its color within seconds due to the specially pigmented cells in their skin. Chameleons rarely change their color as a result of their surroundings and instead use it to communicate with other chameleons. Their “default” color, green, helps them blend into the foliage of their environment.
