African Grey Parrot Fun Facts

  • African Grey Parrots are famous for their incredible ability to mimic human speech and sounds. Some can learn hundreds of words and even use them in context!
  • Besides human speech, they can imitate other animals, household noises, and even musical instruments, making them one of the best mimics among parrots. 
  • These parrots can live up to 50 years or more in managed care, so they can be lifelong companions! 
  • They are considered one of the smartest bird species, with problem-solving skills similar to a young child. 
  • African Grey Parrots love to stay close to their friends and family, and they enjoy cuddling and playing with their favorite humans and other birds.

Scully

Scully is our incredible African Grey Parrot and a long-term resident of the zoo! Born in November 1996, Scully is a smart and sociable female bird with beautiful grey feathers and a striking red tail. She was brought to our zoo in 1997 after being purchased from Portola Valley Feed in Portola Valley. Scully is one of our ambassador animals and ventures to many classrooms across the local area. She loves to makes noises – including some words – and is one of the most curious and playful animals here. She also plays favorites – if you have a beard, you might be her new best friend! At the zoo, you might find her attending a flamingo feeding as a special guest or hanging out with our staff at the Guest Services desk.
