Uromastyx Fun Facts

  • Uromastyx, also known as spiny-tailed lizards, are native to the hot, arid regions of Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. 
  • Unlike many lizards, Uromastyx primarily feed on a plant-based diet, including leaves, flowers, and seeds. 
  • They love basking in the sun and can tolerate body temperatures up to 115°F (46°C)
  • Their spiny tails are used to ward off predators. The tail can deliver a powerful whip. 
  • Uromastyx dig extensive burrows to escape the heat of the day and to sleep at night.
